Care Guide

Timber Care Guide

Real timber naturally evolves over time through use, climate, and environment.

Best Practice

✓ Keep timber dry
✓ Use timber-safe products
✓ Maintain stable humidity
✓ Support large slabs properly

Avoid

✕ Standing water
✕ Prolonged direct sunlight
✕ Extreme moisture
✕ Harsh chemicals

Read Full Guide

Real hardwood reacts naturally to sunlight, humidity, airflow, moisture and temperature changes.

Minor movement, texture changes, hairline cracking and colour variation form part of the natural ageing process of solid timber.

For best long-term performance, avoid prolonged direct sunlight, avoid standing water, maintain balanced indoor humidity, and clean surfaces using soft cloths and timber-safe products.

Large slabs and oversized furniture should always be properly supported and carefully handled during transport or relocation.

With proper care and maintenance, hardwood furniture and architectural timber become even more beautiful with age.

Sourcing

Responsible Sourcing

At JJN Timbers, responsible sourcing is a core part of how we operate.

We prioritise salvaged, reclaimed, invasive, storm-fallen, and responsibly recovered hardwoods over the harvesting of live indigenous trees.

Our Sourcing Commitment

JJN Timbers works closely with landowners, farmers, contractors, municipalities, arborists and industry partners to recover hardwoods that would otherwise be discarded, destroyed or underutilised.

Whenever possible, we prioritise timber recovered from:

  • Storm-damaged trees
  • Land clearing operations
  • Invasive species removal programmes
  • Responsible salvage opportunities
  • Reclaimed timber sources

We do not knowingly process timber originating from:

  • Illegal harvesting operations
  • Protected species without appropriate permits
  • Unverified or undocumented sources
  • Unsustainable forestry practices

Where required, incoming timber is subject to source verification, permit review and chain-of-custody assessment.

By recovering and repurposing exceptional hardwoods, we help preserve valuable timber resources while creating unique products designed to last for generations.

Returns

Returns & Natural Timber Policy

Authentic hardwood is a natural material. Every slab, board and handcrafted piece is unique, with its own grain, colour, texture and movement. Understanding these characteristics helps ensure realistic expectations and long-term enjoyment of your timber investment.

✓ Knots and natural inclusions
✓ Live edges and organic shapes

✓ Slight dimensional movement caused by changes in temperature and humidity

These characteristics are part of the beauty and individuality of real timber.

Read Full Policy

Understanding Real Timber

Timber is a living natural material that continues to respond to its environment long after it has been harvested and manufactured. Changes in temperature, humidity and sunlight exposure may cause timber to expand, contract, develop minor checks or undergo slight movement over time. These are normal characteristics of authentic hardwood and are not considered defects.

Product Selection & Approval

Each slab and hardwood piece is unique. Customers purchasing from photographs, videos, digital approvals or online listings acknowledge that natural variations in grain, colour, texture and appearance may occur between pieces of the same species.

Custom & Bespoke Orders

Custom-built furniture, modified slabs, fabricated projects and products manufactured to customer specifications are non-refundable once production has commenced.

Delivery & Collection

Customers are responsible for inspecting products upon delivery or collection. Any transport damage, shortages or workmanship concerns must be reported within 72 hours.

Environmental Conditions

JJN Timbers cannot accept responsibility for movement, cracking, warping or changes caused by:

  • Excessive moisture
  • Excessive dryness
  • Direct sunlight
  • Outdoor exposure where products are not designed for exterior use
  • Failure to follow recommended care guidelines
  • Improper installation by third parties

Manufacturing Guarantee

Should a genuine manufacturing defect or workmanship issue arise, JJN Timbers will assess the product and may, at its discretion:

  • Repair the item
  • Replace the item
  • Replace the affected component
  • Offer a partial refund
  • Offer a full refund where appropriate

Timber Care

Regular maintenance and appropriate environmental conditions are essential for preserving the appearance and longevity of hardwood products. Customers should follow all recommended care and maintenance guidelines supplied by JJN Timbers.

Not Covered Under This Policy

  • Customer measurement errors
  • Changes requested after production begins
  • Natural timber characteristics
  • Damage caused after collection or delivery
  • Improper storage, installation or maintenance
  • Third-party modifications

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you only sell finished furniture?

No.

JJN Timbers supplies both raw timber and finished hardwood products.

Our stockyard carries one of South Africa’s most unique collections of giant slabs, live edge timber, hardwood beams, roots, cookies, architectural timber and rare hardwood stock. We also craft custom furniture, counters, staircases, vanities, shelving and statement timber installations.

Whether you’re selecting a slab for your own project or commissioning a fully finished piece, our team can assist from timber selection through to final fabrication.

From raw slab to finished masterpiece.

Can I choose my own slab?

Absolutely. Every slab carries its own grain movement, colour variation, live edge detail, texture and natural character, making slab selection one of the most important and exciting parts of the process.

Clients are welcome to visit our Johannesburg showroom and slab yard, or work remotely through detailed photographs, videos, measurements, grain close-ups and digital consultations.

Are your slabs kiln dried?

Many of our slabs undergo kiln drying and moisture preparation depending on timber species, slab size and intended application. Our team will advise on the best preparation process for your specific project.

Do you work with architects and designers?

Yes. JJN Timbers regularly collaborates with architects, interior designers, contractors, lodges, restaurants, hospitality groups, developers and commercial project teams.
